Before you fly: Niagara helicopter tips

A helicopter flight is short, so small things make a big difference: when you go, what you wear, and knowing how the seating really works.

Most of what goes wrong on a Niagara helicopter flight is predictable: a grounded morning, a middle seat, photos full of window reflections. Here is how to avoid each.

The quick answer

Seats are assigned by weight and balance, so no seat, including the front, can be guaranteed. Give every passenger's weight when you book. Flights stop in low cloud and after dark, so fly early in your trip. Wear dark clothes and keep your lens close to the glass for clean photos.

How are seats assigned?

By weight and balance: the crew seats everyone according to fuel load, each passenger's weight and the number on board.

Niagara Helicopters says no seating can be guaranteed ahead of time, and that includes the front seat beside the pilot. You can mention a preference at check-in, but take whatever seat you get: the H130's windows are large on every side.

Is there a weight limit?

Every passenger's weight is required when you book, and heavier travelers should call the operator first.

The weights decide the seating plan rather than who can fly, but some passengers may need an adjusted seat or an extra one. Calling ahead avoids surprises at the heliport.

What weather stops the flights?

Low cloud, poor visibility and darkness: the classic flight needs a 2,400-foot cloud base and 3 miles of visibility.

The operator notes that the weather often changes during the day, so a grounded morning can turn into a flying afternoon. Call the heliport before you go if the sky looks doubtful. Viator bookings cancel free up to 24 hours before, and operators reschedule weather cancellations.

When is the best time to fly?

Early in your trip, and at opening or late afternoon for short queues and soft light.

Flights start at 9 AM every day except one a year; closing time moves with the season and daylight. Midday in summer brings the longest waits, which the operator puts at anywhere from one to 30 minutes.

How do you take good photos from a helicopter?

Wear dark clothes, keep the lens close to the glass and shoot from lift-off.

  • Dark tops cut reflections in the window.
  • Hold the lens near, not on, the glass to avoid vibration.
  • Turn off the flash.
  • Use a fast shutter or burst mode.
  • Start at lift-off: the Whirlpool and Aero Car come first.
  • Then put the camera down for the Horseshoe curve.

What should you bring?

Very little: your voucher, ID, a camera with a strap and a light jacket for the outdoor queue.

Bring a passport if you are crossing between the US and Canada. Loose items are best left in the car. Commentary plays in 12 languages, including English, French, German, Spanish and Italian; ask for yours at check-in.

Can children, seniors and pregnant travelers fly?

Yes: Niagara Helicopters flies passengers from one month to 100 years old, and low-risk pregnancies with a doctor's approval.

Infants fly on a lap. Wheelchairs reach the helipad, but staff cannot help with transfers, so bring a companion who can.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request the front seat?

You can ask at check-in, but seats are set by weight and balance and cannot be guaranteed.

Do the helicopters fly in the rain?

Light conditions may be fine, but low cloud and poor visibility ground the flights. Call ahead on a doubtful day.

Do I need to arrive early?

Arrive with time to check in; the classic flight is walk-in, and waits run from a minute to about half an hour.
